Cyber security skills gap contributing to 80% of breaches

Closing the cybersecurity skills gap has been a topic of interest for a number of years, with many organizations reporting on its slow decline.

From (ISC)2’s 2021 Cyber Workforce Report, the global cybersecurity workforce needs to grow 65% to effectively defend organizations’ critical assets. While the number of professionals needed to fill the gap has decreased from 3.12 million down to 2.72 million in the past year, this is still a significant void that leaves organizations vulnerable.

Today, Fortinet published it's 2022 Cybersecurity Skills Gap Global Research Report that outlines the impact the skills gap is having on organisations around the world. The survey indicates five top themes have emerged:

  • Cybersecurity affects every organization.
  • Recruitment and retention of talent is a problem.
  • Organisations are looking for individuals with certified skills.
  • Organisations are looking for more diversity.
  • Raising cybersecurity awareness remains a key challenge.

The Fortinet survey was conducted in January and February 2022, and included more than 1,200 IT and cybersecurity decision-makers from 29 different locations. There was an even split between the respondents in four regions: North America, EMEA, APAC, and LATAM.

The (ISC)² Cybersecurity Workforce Study is conducted annually to assess the size of the current cybersecurity workforce as well as the existing talent shortage. It aims to better understand the barriers facing the cybersecurity profession and uncover strategies that organizations can use to recruit, build and strengthen their cybersecurity teams. It provides insights on these talented individuals who are excelling in this field, securing their organizations’ critical assets and advancing in their careers. This year’s study includes data on the effects of remote work on organizational cybersecurity practices, insights on the people and tech investments that are planned over the next year and recommended strategies for closing the gap.
